A children's house
Children who come to Netherton will find that they are entering into a warm, safe and stimulating environment. We know from the teachings of Maria Montessori that learning is a serious business for small children and we are there to help them. At the same time children are full of fun.
With us they are encouraged to be themselves, free from judgment or reprimand. They are given time to be sociable and relax, yet the children also know they will be able to work in peace, undisturbed. There is an atmosphere of trust in which teachers and children respect each other. The classroom is also the subject of much care and attention.
In the classroom
The curriculum is vast, multi-layered and multi-dimensional. The subject areas include practical life exercises, sensorial exercises, language, mathematics, cultural subjects and expressive arts. It is impossible to convey just how much any child may accomplish during a day at school. Each child follows an individual path of investigation and discovery.
Activities are meticulously demonstrated when children first arrive and before long they are making their own choices and working independently. The materials in the classroom are designed to be self-correcting so children can solve their own problems and make logical and aesthetic connections.
All children’s work is recorded so that it is possible to check that they are having a genuinely varied experience and rounded development. At the end of the two years that they are at Netherton the children are disciplined, articulate, self-assured and self-aware.
In the garden
Being outside is one of the best parts of the day. It is exhilarating and we are not fainthearted about being out in all weathers and all seasons.
The farming year and the changing cycles of life offer a rich variety of experience and a vital contact with the natural world. Children run, climb trees, ride bikes, plant seeds, study animals, visit the farm, walk in the woods and invent their own worlds. We are lucky in having an idyllic, natural playground at Netherton.
