Self-development in a prepared environment
As in other nurseries, children learn and play in a stimulating classroom filled with educational toys.
What makes Montessori a bit different is the simplified materials. Highly structured intellectual and physical skills are formed by the equipment because each piece teaches one precise thing.
This is heaven for the young child. The technology develops the senses and bit-by-bit the brain learns. For example the Pairing of Sounds requires precise listening. With each skill comes a greater sense of achievement.
Practical Life Skills teach everything the child needs for daily life. Pouring, sorting, transferring, dressing, washing, eating, folding...
What adults take for granted, the child wants to learn. The joy of repeating something is unique to children. We do not pour for the sake of it. Children do.
Maths and Language development is easy, rapid and effective because the tools teach by touch, sound and movement. The brain takes in complex concepts because the children are learning them with their hands.
Once a child has learnt how to learn, cultural knowledge is easily acquired. Geometry, geography, history, biology, astronomy and science are all part of the pre-school curriculum. Children learn that things are unique but interconnected.
